Neonatal Varicella
  • Babies whose mothers develop varicella 7 days or fewer before  delivery, or up to 2 days after delivery are at high risk of severe varicella and should be given ZIG at birth.
  • Babies whose mothers develop varicella 2-30 days after delivery should be given ZIG as soon as possible.
  • Maternal varicella is not  a contraindication to breast feeding.
  • If a baby's siblings have chickenpox, the baby should be ZIG if the mother is non-immune, but the baby does not need to be separated from mother or siblings
