Doctors at NETSDoctors working in newborn and pædiatric retrieval are employed by NETS or seconded from a children's hospital or perinatal referral hospital. They are registrars in training (or qualified) as pædiatricians, neonatologists, pædiatric emergency physicians, pædiatric intensivists or anæsthetists. There is a formal training program; including a regular weekly schedule. The accompanying photograph shows a registrar in action on a retrieval.
The Clinical Fellow at NETS in 2007 is Adrienne Lynn. The visiting Consultant is Dr Hilary Whyte.
Doctors work in NETS for a 6 or 12 month contract. This provides medical retrieval experience concentrated in a relatively short time. Previously, medical retrieval was undertaken by registrars working at one of several tertiary hospitals and dispatched when required. This diluted their experience. As a result, were unlikely to be exposed to the variety and quantity of serious medical problems in children and babies. This photograph shows a registrar undertaking her first retrieval, under supervision of a consultant.
