NETS, a critical care transport service, has the following functions:

To provide telephone advice to clinicians dealing with sick babies and children in hospitals contemplating transfer to another facility.

To initiate and/or coordinate clinical conference calls between referring doctors and appropriate tertiary and other clinicians.

To send medical transport teams to hospitals upon request.

To assess and stabilise patients using mobile intensive care equipment, assisted by distance medicine techniques.

To transport patients to a suitable higher level care centre without compromising the level of care in the process.

To provide outreach education to meet the needs of referring hospitals. This is aimed at improving the prevention, recognition and treatment of acute emergencies. It is also intended to assist referring hospitals in making the best use of medical transport facilities and optimum medical decisions about patient transfer.

To collect and analyze data for use in assessing and improving clinical practice.
