There are 2 specialist pædiatric Emergency Departments for NSW; both located in Sydney. For calls to NETS about non-neonatal patients the NETS' consultant may call the Emergency Medicine Consultant into the referral conference call. This is done where it appears the patient needs a medical retrieval but not necessarily an ICU bed.

Emergency Departments and pædiatric ICUs collaborate closely about critically ill patients to ensure that a patient needing retrieval is handled in the most appropriate and timely manner. Some
ollaborate closely to ensure that patients requiring intensive care are successfully admitted to an appropriate unit.
