NETS is staffed by registered nurses and doctors who are full time employed in retrieval medicine. These clinicians perform both Clinical Coordination and Retrieval Team duties. The Clinical Coordination Call Centre is operational 24 hours a day from a base at Westmead in Sydney. Participants in clinical calls may be located anywhere.

Teams are on standby from this base, with at least one full team available at all times. Other staff are on call to replace a team when one goes out. The total staff complement is 24 nurses, 8 doctors and a clinical post-graduate fellow. There are also several full time and part time staff specialists providing training, clinical support and medical 'control' of each mission..

Road ambulances are crewed by NETS Driver-Services Assistants. One or two of these officers are on standby at the base at all times.

The Child Flight helicopter is flown by pilots who also maintain a crew on base at all times. On each flight there are two pilots.

NETS has a two full time Clinical Nurse Consultants (Neonatal Outreach & Paediatric Outreach) who provide outreach support and education to referring hospitals. There are nurse educators for both neonatal and paediatric practice.

The service is headed by the State Director, assisted by a Deputy Director and Nurse Manager. Quality assurance activities and research are the responsibilities of designated members of staff.

The Service is supported by its own administrative staff, including a IT Manager, Business Manager and Secretary
