There are 2 specialist pædiatric ICUs (pICUs) for NSW and the ACT, both located in Sydney.
Pædiatric patients are also treated in a mixed (adult & pædiatric) intensive care units in Newcastle.

pICUs collaborate closely to ensure that patients requiring intensive care are successfully admitted to an appropriate unit.

Parts of NSW are closer to pICUs in adjoining states. For patients in these areas, an interstate destination is normal.
